Top tips - Caring for your flowers

Caring for your flowers

I'm sure there are many of you out there who received some lovely flowers for Mother's Day and you will want them to last as long as possible. So I thought it would be a good idea to write a blog giving some tips.

If you follow these tips the vase life of your flowers will improve and they will give you enjoyment for longer.

Trim them

Before you arrange your flowers you need to trim the ends of the stems by removing about a ½ inch using a knife or good scissors and at an angle of about 45 degrees. This is to ensure the flowers are able to take up the water.

Strip them!

Next you need to remove all foliage that will be below the water line when placed in the vase to help reduce the harmful bacteria within the water. Bacteria can block the stems and stop the flowers taking up the water.

Water them

Now fill a vase about two thirds full with lukewarm water which will help the closed buds to start opening. Try and make sure you use a vase that isn't made of metal or an aluminium container; glass is ideal. Do not let the water become cloudy and remove any fading flowers.

Feed them

Make sure you use the flower food that is supplied with your flowers as this will encourage the buds to open and to prolong the life and beauty of the flowers. Ever couple of days, replace the water and recut the stems and use flower food if you have some.

Help them

When you have arranged your flowers it is best to place your flowers in a cool location, away from droughts, direct heat or sunlight.

Don't forget

If you have lilies the pollen can stain so it is is a good idea to remove them when the flowers start to open and if you have roses and the heads begin to flop, re-cut the stem and place in boiling hot water for a few minutes then place back in the vase.

I hope these tips help and your flowers will last longer for you to enjoy.
